International IPX data to grow 7-fold over the next 3 years

Montreal, December 11, 2012 — According to the “IPX Trends, Key Players and Traffic” report released today by HOT TELECOM (www.hottelecom.com), international IPX data traffic between 2012-2015 is expected to grow at a CAGR of 97.2%, with IPX voice traffic growing at 39.4%. In addition to traffic migration, a large part of the new traffic growth will come from VoLTE and HD Voice for voice and LTE Roaming for data.

‘Looking ahead, we expect IPX to continue evolving from the adoption phase that we saw in 2012 to an actual growth phase, which we anticipate to start in 2013. LTE is seen by many as the catalyst of growth for IPX and even as the killer IPX application by some’ said Isabelle Paradis, President at HOT TELECOM. By 2014, a large number of LTE networks will have been launched and mobile operators will be looking for International roaming and VoLTE solutions, something IPX will be used for by many. By 2015, IPX hubs will have reached a critical mass in terms of the number of accessible IPX destinations, which should encourage a growing number of IPX customers to connect to them for a large portion of their traffic. This is seen by many as a major trigger for consolidation in the wholesale market.

The research involved online surveys with over 100 communications service providers, and a series of briefings with the major providers and customers of IPX services. From these discussions, HOT TELECOM concludes that there is a discrepancy between customers’ and IPX providers’ expectations when it comes to services, features and migration drivers. For example, the majority of customers surveyed said that they expected to use IPX in 3-4 years mainly to transport VoIP and HD Voice traffic, while providers expected customers to use IPX mainly to transport video/content and RCS traffic.

‘A high level of confusion and disagreement exists regarding the definition, the evolution and the potential of the IPX services and through the course of this report we aim to demystify what flavours of IPX are offered at the moment, where the service is going, what customers think and what are its potentials’ said Isabelle.
