Four Service Providers Accelerate LTE Services, Go Live with Tekelec’s Diameter Signaling Router
Three Tier 1 Service Providers and an International Hub Provider in Asia Pacific
SINGAPORE — CommunicAsia 2012 — June 19, 2012 — Tekelec’s #1 market-leading Diameter Signaling Router (DSR) is now carrying live LTE traffic at four customers: two North American Tier 1s, a Tier 1 in the Asia-Pacific region and a major hub provider in the Asia-Pacific region.
Two customers went from purchase to running live LTE traffic on the DSR in only two months. The brief timeframe demonstrates service providers’ urgency to implement an efficient Diameter signaling architecture that minimizes network costs and sets the foundation for new revenue-generating services.
Together, these four customers will use Tekelec’s Diameter Signaling Router to:
• Scale LTE networks to tens of millions of subscribers;
• Offer subscribers international LTE roaming services;
• Direct valuable subscriber profiles to the appropriate LTE Home Subscriber Server for authentication; and
• Manage signaling traffic increases resulting from new mobile data plans, such as shared data plans or application-based service tiers.
“LTE deployments are accelerating as a result of the increasing demand for mobile data services, compelling network economics and innovative new service opportunities,” said Brian Partridge, vice president of research, Yankee Group. “We recommend that service providers consider implementing dedicated Diameter control plane elements in their LTE and IMS networks in anticipation of the growing data and signaling loads required to deliver new services.”
According to the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), 80 LTE operators have launched commercial services across 38 countries. The 80 networks are quadruple the number available just over a year ago. The GSA forecasts that by the end of 2012, 144 LTE networks will be live in 59 countries.
The DSR, the central nervous system of the New Diameter Network, helps operators manage mobile data and signaling growth and profit from mobile data services. It carries all messages using Diameter, the protocol for network policy, charging, mobility management and authorization information.
“Each new Diameter network is an achievement for the advancement of LTE and a milestone for Tekelec,” said Doug Suriano, Tekelec’s CTO. “Forward-looking service providers are relying on a scalable Diameter signaling core to deliver advanced policies and capture new revenue streams.”
