Babel Beginnings: Eve Baird
In the latest edition of Babel Beginnings. we’re spotlighting our newest Junior Campaign Executive, Eve Baird, who shares her thoughts from her time so far at Babel.
What sparked your interest in B2B technology?
My interest in B2B technology was sparked when studying PR campaigns on a group project at university. I found that I was more interested in the potential for specialisation and variety in B2B PR than the more generic ideas and terms B2C PR uses to appeal to a wide market. I have also always been interested in media and technology more widely and saw B2B technology as an interesting industry to enter due to continuing advancements.
Prior to starting your career in Tech PR, what were your initial thoughts about the industry?
Initially, I assumed most tech PR was done in-house due to the need for specialist knowledge. However, when I researched further I realised that specialist agencies not only have this knowledge but also specific knowledge of the B2B tech PR industry across sectors. I already knew I wanted to work in agency PR due to the fast pace and variety, and the more I learnt about tech PR the more I changed my initial thoughts.
What was the moment for you that made you realise you wanted to work in tech PR?
I’ve always had an interest in technology and this was something I knew I wanted to pursue further after the pandemic which showed the importance of advancing technology. One way I started to do this was through my master’s in Global Media Industries which strengthened my knowledge of the technology and media industries. I already knew I wanted to work in PR, and continuing to learn about the impact of changes in technology made me realise I could combine my interests by working in tech PR. As a continually developing industry, tech always includes an element of learning and adapting which solidified my interest in tech PR.
How are you navigating the industry as a newcomer?
As a newcomer to the industry, I have been enjoying getting to experience the many different areas of tech PR. Getting to work across multiple different teams and clients has helped me pick things up. As I have had different work to do across accounts, I have quickly gained a broad understanding of the industry. There has been a lot to learn and organisation has been crucial for these new opportunities. As a newcomer, I think it’s really important to get a good selection of foundational knowledge in this way.
Finally, any tips or advice for newcomers entering into the industry?
For any other newcomers to technology PR, I think one of the most important pieces of advice I can give is to continue being curious and asking questions. While entering the industry can be intimidating, asking for guidance and taking in as much new information as you can will make this transition easier. Although you will feel overwhelmed at first, everyone has to start somewhere, and asking people who have been in the same situation for advice is helpful.
