IEEE Spectrum Ranking of the Most Valuable Patent Portfolios Places Ruckus in Top 10 of Its Category
SUNNYVALE, CA – December 10, 2012 – Ruckus Wireless, Inc. (NYSE: RKUS) today announced that it debuted on the IEEE Spectrum’s Patent Power 2012 scorecard, ranking in the top 10 in the world within its category for its patented innovations.
The IEEE Spectrum Patent Power scorecard, compiled by 1790 Analytics, is an annual analysis of thousands of U.S. patent portfolios of more than 5,000 leading commercial enterprises, academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies.
The benchmarking takes into account not only the size of organizations’ patent portfolios but also the quality, as reflected in characteristics such as growth, impact, originality, and general applicability. The focus on both patent quantity and quality allows small, innovative organizations to sit alongside much larger household named corporations.
“When it comes to patents, it’s quality, not quantity that really counts,” said William Kish, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Ruckus Wireless. “This is a noteworthy recognition that reflects the significance of the advances we’ve made in wireless communication. Our strength is a result of innovations that artfully draw from diverse technological domains including networking, machine learning, radios, antennas, and systems.”
To date, Ruckus has a portfolio of over 75 patents awarded by the United States Patent Offices (USPTO) and other patent offices around the world, which cover a wide-range of Wi-Fi innovations.
Among the company’s patent portfolio are innovations in intelligent antenna arrays, smart antennas with polarization diversity, best path signal controls, dynamic generation of encryption keys, automatic installation of security and configuration information on end users devices, dynamic multicast conversion and real-time creation of patterns for shaping RF emissions.
IEEE’s 2012 Patent Power Scorecard Ranking Methodology
According to the IEEE, organizations are ranked based on their Pipeline Power – an overall measure of the strength of each organization’s patent portfolio that takes into account both its size and quality. The Pipeline Power for the year 2011 is calculated using the formula:
Pipeline Power = (number of 2011 patents) x (Pipeline Growth Index) x (Adjusted Pipeline Impact) x (Pipeline Originality) x (Pipeline Generality)
The Pipeline Power is derived by taking the size of an organization’s patent portfolio, as measured by the number of U.S. patents it has been granted in the most recent full year (2011 in this case). This figure is then weighted based on a number of other metrics that reflect the growth, impact, originality, and generality of the organization’s patent portfolio.
