San Jose Earthquakes New Stadium Will Rock With Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi

SUNNYVALE and SAN JOSE, CA – March 24, 2014 Ruckus Wireless, Inc. (NYSE: RKUS) announced today that it has agreed to a sponsorship with Major League Soccer’s (MLS) San Jose Earthquakes to provide Ruckus products and technology for a free, public Smart Wi-Fi network for fans attending games at the team’s new 18,000-seat stadium located on Coleman Avenue in San Jose, CA, which is currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2015. The network will include over 150 Ruckus ZoneFlex™ access points (APs) to provide fans with a high-quality Wi-Fi experience throughout the stadium grounds.

“This is an exciting project that our fans can look forward to utilizing at our new stadium,” said Earthquakes president Dave Kaval. “We want our stadium to reflect our community, and technological innovation is a key component of Silicon Valley. Ruckus Wireless is a great fit because of their local roots and experience working not just with Silicon Valley Wi-Fi network deployments, but with these types of deployments around the world.”

Ruckus Wireless has pioneered the development and delivery of Smart Wi-Fi technology. Using patented adaptive antenna technology (BeamFlex™), Ruckus access points are able to dynamically adapt to ever-changing RF environments, ensuring an optimal Wi-Fi signal to every connected device, such as smartphones and tablets.

Stadium deployments have historically proved a challenge for most Wi-Fi vendors, given the very high client density and the self-interference created by deploying so many access points in close proximity within the limited space of a sports arena. To overcome these obstacles, Ruckus has developed Smart Wi-Fi technology optimized to ensure reliable, consistent connectivity and high performance for very high-density environments.

“We love being able to ‘cause a Ruckus’ with San Jose Earthquakes fans, and hope they’re looking forward to this partnership as much as we are,” said Rob Mustarde, VP of Marketing at Ruckus Wireless. “Today we have a significant and growing number of stadium deployments both within the MLS and at other famous sports arenas all over the world, including two of Brazil’s largest soccer stadiums, which will be hosting FIFA World Cup matches in 2014. We look forward to completing this exciting project with the Earthquakes and having a state of the art Smart Wi-Fi network ready for action by the start of their new season.”

The Earthquakes’ new stadium adds to the long, growing and impressive list of other Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi high-density stadium and arena deployments around the world, including: Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC; Chennai Stadium, a 50,000-seat facility in India; Rio Tinto Stadium, a 28,000-seat venue in Salt Lake City, UT; Imtech Arena in Hamburg, Germany; the National Stadium of Lima, Peru, and two of Brazil’s largest soccer stadiums, both of which will be hosting FIFA World Cup matches in 2014—the Estádio Nacional de Brasília, a 68,009-seat stadium in Brasília, and Estádio Octávio Mangabeira (also known as Arena Fonte Nova), a 52,048-seat stadium in Salvador.

Ruckus Wireless has also recently helped deploy the “Wickedly Fast Wi-Fi” free, public outdoor network for the City of San Jose, CA, and a new, free public outdoor Wi-Fi service for the City and County of San Francisco up and down the world-famous Market Street corridor, ‘San_Francisco_Free_WiFi.’
