We’re all going for Gold

Everything good must come to an end; with the Olympic games now over, it’s got us thinking about some of the major similarities between the PR field and the sports field. Yes, we’re going there! Read on for some laser-sharp observations and tips for accessing the top of the podium.

First off, it’s worth remembering that success doesn’t look the same to everyone. For some, success is winning the race (be that a brand race to the top, or the Tour de France), for others success is increased brand awareness, leading to further opportunity. But what’s important to note is that we’re all running in different races, or swimming in different lanes (pardon the pun).

So it’s essential for your incumbent agency to know your sport, or industry,  inside out; meaning they’re able to pull the starting gun trigger on the right races for your brand. Because, like the Olympics, success in PR and marketing only happens when you’re entered into the right race. After all, you can’t enter a relay race without a baton. It’s your agency’s job to pitch the right stories to the right journalists or publications, speaking to the most appropriate analysts, at the right time, otherwise you’ll never get on the podium. Here at Babel, we think of this as working smarter. Getting the best business results for our clients is the outcome of nearly 20 years of honed practice in our discipline – the GOAT of tech PR and marketing (less than humble brag, sorry).

Secondly, in the same way that athletes train for years to excel in their sport, our team at Babel has dedicated the best part of two decades to being the best in tech PR and marketing. That means building the strongest relationships and connections, mastering the art of story-telling and content creation, understanding what stories are going to light up the market, getting under the skin of the clients we support – so that we can truly become an extension of their teams. In short, we’ve invested blood, sweat and tears into ensuring that what we deliver to our clients is best-in-class, and worthy of a gold medal, whatever their individual race.

And last but not least, data talks.  This year we were more aware than ever of the part that technology and data played in the Olympics. From splitting hairs, or rather hundredths of seconds in athletics, to refining statistics for pre-Olympic training, its presence was widely felt.

In sports and PR, insights make medals

At Babel, we’ve always felt a certain frustration with traditional, or outdated reporting methods, which often provide inaccurate data for brands. So much so, that we’ve created our own tools to improve the quality of data we use to support our clients. Introducing our own measurement tool, RUMA. A media analysis service designed to target the right media and enhance your search results, meaning more efficient and effective PR and marketing campaigns, delivering the right results at the right time. Just another reason for us to love the tech field we’re in.

So, there you have it. A few (somewhat tenuous) links between a successful Olympics and what we think of as a successful PR and marketing strategy – incorporating hard work, a deep understanding of the client’s industry, technical know-how, creativity and of course, the data to back it all up.
